Four Ply yarn, sometimes called sock weight or fingering weight, is one of the finest yarn weights you’ll find in a well-stocked yarn shop, sitting a step below the slightly thicker sport weight and considerably slimmer than the beloved Double Knit. It typically works up on 2.5 mm to 3.25 mm needles or hooks, producing a delicate, closely knit fabric with a standard gauge of around 28 to 32 stitches over 10 cm. That fine, neat stitch definition makes it an absolute joy for projects where detail really matters — think intricate lace shawls, Fair Isle colourwork, lightweight baby garments, and of course the classic hand-knitted sock, where its durability and close fabric come into their own. Despite its slender profile, Four Ply creates a surprisingly sturdy and long-lasting fabric, particularly when worked in wool or wool-blend fibres. You’ll find it spun from a wonderful range of materials including merino, cashmere blends, cotton, alpaca, and mixed-fibre superwash options, each lending its own beautiful drape and softness to the finished piece.
