DK

Double Knitting yarn, universally known as DK, is one of the most beloved and widely used yarn weights in the craft world, and it is easy to see why. Sitting neatly between the finer 4-ply and the slightly chunkier Aran, DK strikes a wonderfully practical balance — lightweight enough to keep garments comfortable and wearable, yet substantial enough to grow quickly on your needles or hook. You can expect a typical gauge of around 22 stitches to 10 cm on 4 mm needles, giving a smooth, even fabric with lovely stitch definition. It is a fantastic choice for knitted and crocheted jumpers, cardigans, hats, scarves, baby garments, and blankets, as well as a host of smaller accessories. DK is available in an enormous range of fibres — springy British wool, soft merino, breathable cotton, practical acrylic, and sumptuous blends of bamboo or alpaca — meaning you can find the perfect match for every season and every skin. The colour palettes tend to be wonderfully varied too, from rich jewel tones to gentle pastels, making it an inspiring weight to work with whether you are picking up needles for the very first time or adding to a well-seasoned stash.
