We are back with another Macrame for beginners post!

Last week we took you through the steps of the Larks Head and Square knots - see post here.

This post if going to show you how to create a simple macrame keychain using the Square knot.

Perfect for a beginner project.

Keychain made using Square Knots

Ensuring the knots are pulled tighty

What you'll need:

Step 1: Cut your cord

Lay your cord and key ring on a craft board / cutting board for a flat surface

Step 2: Thread cord through the key ring

Make sure cord is even in length

Step 3: Lay cord on your board and seperate your cords

You should now have 4 working cords

Step 4: Take the 1st cord on the left, bring over the 2nd and 3rd cord, and under the 4th

Making a number '4' shape with the cord

Step 5: Take the 4th cord, bring under 3rd and 2rd cord and over the 1st

Weaving in the opposite direction to step 2

Thread cord and seperate

Step 4

Create a 4 with your cords

Step 5

Weave 4th in opposite direction

Step 6: Pull cords 1 and 4 tight

You might have to wiggle the middle cords 2 and 3 if they bunch up. 

Step 7: Repeat process in the opposite direction - take the 4th cord, bring over the 3rd and 2nd cord, and under the 1st

Step 8: Take the 1st cord, bring under 2nd and 3rd cord and over the 4th

Weaving in the opposite direction to step 7

Step 6

Pull cords 1 and 4 tight

Step 7

Back to front 4 shape

Step 8

Take 1st in opposite direction

Step 9: Pull cords 1 and 4 tight

You might have to wiggle the middle cords 2 and 3 if they bunch up. You have completed the first square knot.

Step 10: Repeat the process for as many rounds as you would like

This will create the length of the keychain

Pull cords tight

Repeat steps 4-9

Step 10

Repeat steps until desired length

Step 11: Once complete, pull the last knot tightly 

To secure off

Step 12: Trim ends

Leaving about 1-2 inches of cord

Step 13: Untwist cord ends

To make a fluffy tail

Complete!

Notes:

  • Choose any cord colour of thickness

  • Repeat steps as many times as you wish 

  • Cord length customisable

  • If you use a larger key ring, you may want to start with a Larks Head knot
