How To Make A Reusable Swim Nappy

How To Make A Reusable Swim Nappy

Summer is approaching, which often means summer holidays and swimming!

For the sustainable swap this week we decided to make a reusable swim nappy - perfect for days at the pool and / or beach.

Reusable swim nappies are far less bulky than disposables, therefore much more comfortable for the little ones.

Take a look at what we used and the steps we took below:

What you will need:

  • NAPPY BLANK
We decided to cheat a little bit here - instead of using regular PUL and creating a template, we used these nappy blanks that we stock. So much quicker! This will be the outer layer.
  • VELCRO
Instead of going for snaps this time, we went for an even easier option: velcro. Perfect for quick changes. 16cm loop & 2 x 5cm hook.
  • ELASTIC
For around the back and the legs. 3 x 12cm.

  • PINS
You might want to secure your fabric when sewing to stop slipping.
  • CUTTING BOARD
For a flat surface you can cut on.

  • THREAD
You might want to choose a neutral white, or match the thread to your cotton.
  • SEWING MACHINE

Step 1: Layer Nappy Blank & Jersey Mesh

Right sides together. Pin.

Step 2: Cut arount the Jersey Mesh

Using scissors or cutter.

Step 3: Sew around edge

Leaving a turning hole along the front edge.

Step 6: Turn inside out

Using turning gap.

Step 7: Top sew

Make sure to catch turning gap. Pull fabric tight as sewing. You need to sew around the elastic, creating a channel.

Step 8: Cut velcro

16cm loop & 2 x 5cm for hook.

Step 9: Sew velcro

Loop goes horizontal along the front edge, on outside (on PUL layer) - central. Hooks go horizontal on the flaps, on the inside (on Jersey Mesh layer).
