How To Make A Reusable Cloth Menstrual Liner

Hello April!

This month we are all about Sustainable Swaps - showing you how to make your own eco-friendly reusables.

First up - a Reusable Cloth Menstrual Liner (6-inch). Perfect for lighter days or as a backup.

There are many ways to make reusable pads and this is our favourite - it is easy to follow, and uses up any scrap fabric you have hanging around.

Let yourself have fun and personalise your liners by using whichever colours or patterns you'd like.

Take a look at everything we used and the steps we took below.

What you will need:

  • TEMPLATE
Print off and cut put this premade template.
  • POLAR FLEECE
This will be the bottom of your pad / liner. We used orange as that is what we had laying around (this project is a fab way of using your scraps!!)
  • COTTON FLANNEL / WYNCIETTE
This will be your middle layer. We chose white (again another scrap we had!) - as this is a middle layer it really does not matter what colour it is.
  • COTTON / COTTON JERSEY
This will be the top layer. We chose to make two, one for each Cotton and Cotton Jersey - both work exactly the same, so is up to preference on feel and design. What is great about making your own pad / liner is that you can choose which pattern and / or colours you'd like to use! Have fun with it! For one we used the Universe Cotton Jersey, and for the other we used Hogwarts Houses Licensed Digital Cotton Fabric.
  • KAM SNAPS
These are used as the fastenings. We chose
  • SCISSORS OR ROTARY CUTTER
To cut out template and cut fabric

  • PINS
You might want to secure your fabric when sewing to stop slipping.
  • CUTTING BOARD
For a flat surface you can cut on.

  • THREAD
You might want to choose a neutral white, or match the thread to your cotton.
  • SEWING MACHINE
  • SHARP TOOL
To make holes for the snaps

Step 1: Print pattern and cut out

Premade pattern linked above.

Step 2: Layer Cotton and Flannel & draw around pattern

Lay cotton face down, place flannel on top. Use fabric marker. Pin fabric.

Step 4: Place cotton face down on the Polar fleece

Pin.

Step 5: Cut Polar Fleece

Again, we just trimmed keeping rectangle shape. Using scissors or rotary cutter.

Step 6: Sew around the pattern line

Using a sewing machine. Leave a turning hole.

Step 7: Cut around the shape

Leave about 1cm. Create a flap at the turning hole. We like to create little snips in those corners near the wings for a sharper edge.

Step 8: Turn inside out

You may need a tool to help get the corners.
